Harrisville Designs Shetland Wool Weaving Yarn
Harrisville Shetland is a time-tested weaving yarn beloved by handweavers for its rich heathered colors, impressive durability, and beautiful drape after finishing. Spun at the historic Harrisville mill in New Hampshire — a working mill town since 1794 — this yarn carries generations of American textile tradition in every cone.
A quick note on the name: Shetland refers to the weight of the yarn, not the fiber. The wool itself is a carefully balanced blend of fine Australian wool for softness and luster, and a heartier New Zealand wool for strength and resilience. Spun with a higher twist than most wool yarns, Shetland is exceptionally durable — it only improves with wear and washing. Cones are unwashed, so the yarn has a firmer hand straight off the cone; once wet-finished, it blooms into a fuller, loftier fabric with a noticeably softer feel. Always sample and wet-finish before calculating your final sett.
Shetland is a 2-ply fingering weight yarn (comparable to 8/4 cotton in weaving weight), suitable for weaving, knitting on US 2–4 needles, and crochet. It works beautifully across a wide range of woven structures including plain weave, twill, overshot, and color block weaves. Its heathered and tweedy palette — blended from multiple dyed fibers for depth and variation — makes it especially compelling for colorwork, doubleweave, and tapestry. Excellent for scarves, blankets, shawls, baby wraps, and lightweight yardage.

10–12 EPI
